When Will Our Vote Count?
James Island residents have gone to the polls repeatedly in recent years to proclaim that we want to form a town, which would afford us the right of self-determination. Repeatedly, the City of Charleston has challenged that right in the courts.
Unfortunately, the courts also have denied us our rights as voters. Each time, the votes increase because of the heavy-handed way Charleston reacts.
Charleston continues to move James Island toward urbanization instead of allowing us to determine a measured approach to development to keep a rural flavor.
Recently, the editorial page espoused, "Let Hollywood's voters be heard." What a wonderful testimony to our democratic form of government. I couldn't agree more. I would hope The Post and Courier would take the same position relative to the wishes of the James Island community.
Our country has been fighting long and hard to secure the right of self-determination for Afghanistan and Iraq. It is the right thing to do. It would be wonderful if our legislators supported these same rights in this country for communities of citizens who want to be able to control their own destiny. I believe our state Legislature will do so.
Citizens of James Island, don't give up hope. Ask your state representative to help us.
